Kern & Sohn invests in future security

Balingen. The Swabian precision scales manufacturer Kern & Sohn is focusing on strengthening its position on the global market. In the face of increasing global challenges, the company is investing heavily in the modernization of its production and in new technologies.

Kern & Sohn, known for its high-precision scales, is responding to the growing importance of digitalization and sustainability. The company is developing its own IT platforms to seamlessly integrate scales into customer processes. One example is a pilot project in a Swiss clinic in which patient data is transmitted directly to the hospital IT system.

Kern & Sohn is expanding its production capacities in Germany in order to set itself apart from the increasing competition from Asia. A new site near Balingen is to ensure independence from the Asian market. At the same time, new production facilities are being built in India and Thailand.

Despite the challenges posed by the EU Medical Device Regulation, which is leading to a reduction in the medical scales product portfolio, the company sees positive long-term prospects. The focus is on demanding applications that require maximum precision and reliability.

“German manufacturers can hold their own wherever high quality is required,” emphasizes Marcus Korthäuer, Chairman of the Measurement and Testing Technology Division at VDMA. Kern & Sohn underlines this statement with its commitment to research and development and its comprehensive range of services.

With a turnover of 1.16 billion euros in 2023, the German scales industry occupies a leading position worldwide. Kern & Sohn contributes significantly to this success with its expertise and innovative solutions.

Giant pumpkin from Torgau causes a stir at Leipzig Zoo

Torgau/Leipzig. An unusual gift has enriched Leipzig Zoo: a giant pumpkin weighing 235 kilograms. It was grown by 24-year-old hobby gardener Niels Bunge from Torgau. Originally, another grower’s pumpkin was supposed to delight the elephants, but it had rotted. Bunge stepped in and donated his colossus.

The young gardener reveals his recipe for success: good genetics, plenty of water and natural fertilizer are the key to such large fruits. Bunge has been passionate about pumpkins since he was a child and even won a competition this year.

The giant pumpkin is a welcome change for the elephants at the zoo. They can play and nibble on it for hours. Bunge is proud that his hobby not only gives him pleasure in gardening, but also brings joy to animals.

Overloading timber trucks in the Franconian Forest: a worrying development

Upper Franconia. The number of cases of overloaded timber trucks is increasing in the district of Kronach in Upper Franconia. First on Monday and now again on Wednesday, such a truck was taken out of circulation in the Franconian Forest. The last truck stopped was over 23 percent overloaded.

Truck loaded with tree trunks

The police have already detected similar violations several times in recent weeks. The repeated incidents indicate a worrying trend. The reasons for this accumulation are manifold and require closer examination. Possible causes could be

Lack of weighing facilities: Drivers do not have calibrated truck scales at the forest and may only be able to estimate the load weight.

Disregarding regulations: Some drivers may deliberately ignore the legally prescribed weight limits.

Economic pressure: Transport companies may be tempted to transport more cargo at once by overloading and thus save costs.

Lack of control: It could be due to insufficient controls by the authorities, which means that violations are not detected at an early stage.

The consequences of overloading are varied and serious. Overloaded trucks pose an increased safety risk. They can be harder to brake, unstable on bends and cause more damage to the road surface. They also pose a considerable danger to other road users.

Conclusion: The repeated discovery of overloaded timber trucks in Upper Franconia is a serious problem. Everyone involved needs to be made aware of the dangers of overloading and mobile weighbridges need to be installed in forestry areas during the season. This is the only way to ensure safety on the roads and prevent further accidents.
