Heavy traffic and difficult geology come together on the Elbe, where Hamburg’s wastewater industry recovers its recyclable materials. In the recycling plant for residues from wastewater treatment ( VERA ), the incineration residues from the Hamburg sewage treatment plant gypsum, ash and phosphorus. Up to 100 trucks a day deliver, collect and keep the cycle moving. Every minute counts, every data record must be correct. This is where our solution comes in: two underfloor truck scales ESSMANN HE-SFK 20 controlled via the EWP weighing software with direct SAP connection, operated via two MXXL self-service terminals – Robust design, fast operation, legally compliant results.
Initial situation: High tonnages, tight cycle times
The requirements were clear and demanding: high throughput rates, a tight plant layout, 24/7 operation – and a building site that favors subsidence. In order for precision and availability to go hand in hand, the mechanics, software and traffic routing had to be planned as a unit. Our underfloor solution provided the framework: space-saving, protected, with defined entry and exit.
Foundation: Micropiles instead of compromises
Traditional shallow foundations would have posed a risk to accuracy and service life. For this reason, each scale rests on in-situ concrete foundations that are embedded in load-bearing soil layers via micropiles. This ensures that the measuring section remains geometrically stable, regardless of changing groundwater levels or heavy traffic. The underfloor construction additionally protects the bridge, facilitates winter and maintenance services and keeps the surrounding area clear.

Self-service: fast check-in at MXXL
In day-to-day business, the benefits are evident at every axle. Drivers identify themselves at the self-operating terminal, operate the process independently and receive their receipts immediately – without switches, without detours. The first and second weighings are guided and reproducible; errors are fewer and downtimes shorter. For plant logistics, this means a predictable yard, clear sequences and fewer queries.
Integration: EWP and SAP speak the same language
The EWP weighing software is connected to SAP so that transaction data can flow into the ERP. Reports are available in an audit-proof format. This creates a continuous data chain: from entry to balancing in the balance sheet.

Operation: Robustness that works in the background
Good accessibility counts for maintenance. Corrosion-protected scale pits, clear drainage, service-friendly components, all designed to support 24/7 operation without surprises. The scales become a reliable infrastructure: they don’t attract attention, they work.
Good for HAMBURG Wasser: Precision makes the circular economy measurable
Recycling is only as good as its material flow balance. Anyone who recovers phosphorus and markets by-products accurately needs reliably measured tons and clear allocations. The combination of HE-SFK 20, MXXL self-service, EWP and SAP delivers exactly that: precise weighing in accordance with calibration law, consistent data and lean processes – on a foundation that can cope with the site conditions.
A system that simply runs
Two underfloor truck scales, two MXXL terminals, an EWP integration – and a system that demonstrates every day how the circular economy works on an industrial scale. If you are facing similar challenges – difficult building ground, high throughput, ERP integration – contact us.
