ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation has developed a new weighing system for an innovative customer in the waste disposal industry a HE-ÜWS overhead truck scale with two terminals for driver self-service was developed and successfully put into operation.

Customer

The client is an innovative and efficient waste management company for municipal services with over 200 employees. Its core business areas include the collection and transportation of household waste, bulky waste and recyclable waste as well as the collection, treatment and recycling of organic waste. The company also operates four recycling centers in the city. The very high quality standard is reflected in the certification as a specialist waste management company as well as the explicit quality and environmental policy.

Requirements for the truck scales

A truck scale was required for a new customer site. Despite the ground conditions with a high groundwater level, it was to be possible to handle the high volume of incoming vehicles without additional weighing personnel. The scales also needed to be easy to relocate in a few years’ time.

Technical solution

ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation advised the customer intensively and together they developed a technical solution consisting of the 20 meter long HE-ÜWS above-ground truck scales and two and two driver self-service terminals was developed and elaborated.

Implementation

Foundation work

For the above-ground version of the truck scales HE-ÜWS truck scales installed in above-ground design require two foundations at the front and one in the middle. For this purpose, the ground is first prepared in accordance with the detailed specifications and drawings of ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation.
The ground must be prepared on site in accordance with the specifications of ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation so that the foundations and scales can be operated for a long time.

The HE-ÜWS truck scales require only minor work on site to accommodate the precast concrete foundations and weighbridges.
The substrate is prepared with materials specified by ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation so that the HE-ÜWS truck scales can be operated for a long time.

Preparations for the foundations of the truck scales are almost complete.

Delivery and assembly of the precast concrete foundations and the weighbridge components

The three prefabricated concrete foundations are positioned exactly according to the ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation drawing and placed on the prepared ground.

The two scale bridges are then placed on the precast concrete foundations. The load cells are not yet installed, but the bridges are first placed on so-called “dummies”. These metal spacers ensure that the weighbridges can be aligned. This procedure protects the measuring technology and load cells from overloading when the heavy concrete parts are set down by crane.

Assembly and wiring of the scale base unit

The so-called scale base, consisting of self-aligning bearings and load cells, is then installed. For this purpose, the scale bridge is lifted with hydraulic jacks with millimeter precision and the scale base is installed by our service technicians.

Installation and commissioning of the driver self-service terminals

ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation offers various options for self-service of the scales by the drivers. It is possible for drivers to operate the scale solely via card readers or scanners, the EWS weighing electronics or a touchscreen PC.

In this case, the customer opted for coupled operation via the EWS-8000E weighing electronics with card readers. ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation has developed its own software for the weighing electronics for easy operation by drivers. This system for self-service of the scales can be individually configured and expanded with receipt printers, card or chip readers, barcode scanners or QR code scanners.

The master data, such as license plate number, customer, supplier, materials, etc., are stored on the weighing electronics. Data can be flexibly recorded directly on the weighing electronics via the keyboard or via an EWP PC workstation.

For customers who do not require the full range of EWP functions on their scales, ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation has developed software for PCs that makes it easier for customers to maintain the master data on the weighing electronics and read out weighing data.

The cost-effective HE-Archiv9000 software was developed by ESSMANN | Waagen & Automation precisely for this purpose. It enables customers to transfer master data between a PC and the weighing electronics and to retrieve the weighing data from the weighing electronics.
