HE-DRS dynamic track scales for calibratable train weighing during operation (weigh-in-motion)
The ESSMANN HE-DRS rail vehicle scale enables dynamic train weighing with high accuracy – directly during operation. Weigh-in-Motion (WiM) technology is ideal when calibratable weighing, a large number of freight wagons and a time-critical logistics process come together.
Each wagon is automatically weighed as it passes through the dynamic track scale – regardless of whether it is empty or loaded. The measurement takes place without stopping: the train is pushed or pulled over the scales at a constant speed. Our intelligent ESSMANN weighing system automatically determines the gross, tare and net weights per wagon and for the entire train.
Thanks to the integrated EWP weighing software, wagon lengths, axle numbers, bogie configurations and different wagon types can be recognized and processed in real time – without prior manual input by the operator.
Liquid bulk goods, tank wagons and other sensitive transports can also be weighed dynamically, provided the axles or bogies are fully on the scales during measurement. This ensures precise and reproducible measurement results.
Advantages of the ESSMANN HE-DRS WiM track scales:
- Verifiable according to PTB specifications for dynamic weighing
- Automatic weight determination in driving mode
- Compatible with mixed train formations & variable numbers of axles
- Fast throughput times with high measuring accuracy
- Seamless integration into yard management systems & station logistics
Typical areas of application: Industrial tracks, factory railroads, container terminals, agricultural logistics, transshipment centers, energy supply (coal, gas, biomass) – wherever precise, calibratable and fast weighing of trains in transit is required.

Installation and commissioning
Installation and commissioning include:
- Delivery of the complete scale free to the installation site,
- Supervision of track construction work in the area of the weighbridge,
- Assembly of the complete scale,
- Device installation,
- Device connection,
- Device and system test,
- Adjustment and presentation of the scales for official verification,
- Instruction in operation following the installation of the appliance and
- Trial operation.
Under normal conditions, 10 working days are required to install the scale offered. The scale can be driven over within 1 – 1 ½ days after the start of installation, provided that the track system has been prepared accordingly.
The HE-DRS rail vehicle scale is a system for the dynamic and static weighing of rail vehicles and complies with the applicable DIN standards, the regulations of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the OIML recommendations. The load specifications of Eurocode 3 (DIN EN 1993) and load model 71 are decisive for the
production and dimensioning of the scales.

“The installation and commissioning went smoothly thanks to excellent planning. The operation of the dynamic rail scales is flawless.”

Information on installing the dynamic track scale
The dynamic ESSMANN track scales for Weigh-in-Motion applications are installed by our trained, experienced installation team – reliably, precisely and on schedule.
Before installation, the affected track section must be closed. In close coordination with a certified track construction company, a foundation pit is created and the rail infrastructure prepared in accordance with our design plans and installation specifications.
The track scale modules are delivered by truck and placed in the prepared pit using suitable lifting equipment. The connecting rails included in the scope of delivery then ensure precise, low-vibration integration of the scales into the existing track bed. The installation work ensures uninterrupted use of the rail network after completion.
After installation, the Weigh-in-Motion scale is calibrated and the system electronics and software components are configured. Our service team performs an initial verification on site – with approved calibration vehicles and calibration weights – so that the scale can be released directly for legal-for-trade operation in accordance with PTB requirements.
The ESSMANN HE-DRS is not only a high-tech weighing system, but also a module that can be seamlessly integrated into the infrastructure of modern railroad operations, logistics centers, industrial tracks or intermodal transhipment facilities – ready for calibratable weigh-in-motion use in real operations.
