A major project for North Rhine-Westphalia

With an investment of around 260 million euros, the modernization of Duisburg Central Station is one of the most important infrastructure projects in North Rhine-Westphalia. The measures include:

• the new construction of the track hall with a striking, wave-shaped glass and steel roof,
• the complete refurbishment of all six platforms with modern waiting areas, escalators and guidance systems for the blind,
• as well as the renewal of the overhead line systems and drainage systems.

The construction work, which is expected to last from 2022 until 2028, will take place during ongoing operations and place high demands on planning and implementation. The project is being implemented in collaboration between the Railway Construction and Civil Engineering departments and the sister company Eiffage Infra-Rail. The steel roof is being constructed by the Group’s sister company, SEH Engineering.

The Eiffage Infra-Rail GmbHa company with over 125 years of experience in rail infrastructure construction, was entrusted with key tasks in the modernization of Duisburg Central Station. As a specialist in track and railroad construction, Eiffage Infra-Rail is responsible for this project, among other things:

• the dismantling and new construction of platforms, including drainage, underground cable laying and earthworks,
• the construction of foundation structures in special civil engineering for the new track hall,
• as well as the installation of platform equipment such as benches, waiting areas and guidance systems for the blind.

HE-Point: Efficient checkweighing on shunting tracks

The strategic positioning on tracks outside the station enables efficient weight control of the wagons before they enter and after they leave the main station.

• Dynamic weighing: Recording of wagon weights while traveling at speeds of up to 10 km/h so that operations are not impaired.

• Cost-efficient solution: The more complex installation of a static track level would have been impractical and too expensive for use for just six years during the construction period.
